Emerging talent

Up-and-coming talent is the future and lifeblood of our industries. Creativity in Tasmania will thrive when we encourage and nurture this talent.

Through the Emerging Talent awards we aim to celebrate and provide opportunities for new talent to be recognised for their achievements, and bridge the gap towards industry. Those awards include:

– Print Apprentice of the Year

– Young Executive of the Year

– Design Student of the Year

– Digital Student of the Year

– Inclusive Work Award

After a brief hiatus, the Print Apprentice of the Year award is back!

We’re looking for print legends in the making. Entry is open to all Tasmania-based printing apprentices who were in their third or fourth year of training during 2021. Entrants will be judged on their employer’s report, portfolio of work, and an interview with the Judging Panel.

The winner will be announced at the awards night and presented with a trophy.

This award recognises the suits that keep our organisations not just humming but thriving. Whether employed as a coordinator, manager or executive, Young Executive of the Year will be awarded to a young and hungry account-servicing member of the team who shows exemplary talent at client liaison, financial management, adventurous thinking, or outstanding signs of being an excellent future industry leader. We’re looking for someone who makes contributions beyond their functional, technical or specialist area, and will demonstrate an outstanding commitment to their personal and professional development which shows their maturity and self-awareness.

Entry is open to any Tasmanian currently employed in the creative industries under the age of 35. Entrants will be judged on their employer’s report, their CV, and an interview with the Judging Panel. Entry is by nomination only, so Young Executives: make sure to raise this with your organisation.

The winner will be announced at the awards night and presented with a trophy.

As well as winning a prestigious trophy, winners of Student of the Year will take part in the Diemen Awards work placement program; a two-week placement at a design, digital or print company that aligns with the student’s studies. It’s designed to give the winning students the opportunity to immerse themselves within some of Tasmania’s leading creative organisations and explore the reality and excitement of a commercial creative environment.

Entry is via a nomination process. Teachers and faculties select up to five students from design, digital, and other creative industry courses to submit their entries. Nominees must submit a folio of their best pieces of work to studentoftheyear@diemenawards.com.au. Folios cannot include more than eight pieces of work and must clearly state which award is being entered.

A formal interview with the Student of the Year nominees takes place in late November. Interviews cover the student’s folio, achievements to date, where they see themselves in the industry now (and in the future) and other relevant matters. The top three nominees in each category will be invited to the Awards night, where the winners will be announced and trophies presented.

We’re looking for ambitious people from the disability sector who have demonstrated skill and desire to work in the creativity industry. Suitable individuals will be offered a two-week work placement that suits their abilities at a company that aligns with their talent and interests.

Entrants’ folios are to be submitted by teachers, lecturers, or recognised industry organisations in the sector. The award is not limited to students, although a relevant tertiary qualification is required to be eligible.
